Aaliyah survived a traumatic experience only to live in fear. She sometimes left school to receive treatment. She faced some trouble with the law. All of this put her behind in school.
Until junior high, Aaliyah had been a devoted student. When she came to Texans Can as a last resort, she began to get in touch with that part of herself again. Thanks to the relentless support of her student advocate—who knew it was just her coping mechanism when she would try quitting—she persisted. Supported in this way, she would later explore new possibilities, completing an electrician pre-apprenticeship and earning both an OSHA 30 certification and a Community Healthcare Worker certification.
Aaliyah graduated in 2022.
