Thursday evening starting at 4:00pm, students and parents are invited to join Texans Can - San Antonio as it hosts a ninety-minute poetry slam sponsored by the Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) program and judged by local community members.
In this friendly competition, students will perform original works interpreted through both voice and gesture, and audience responses will be considered in determining the winners.
ACE provides no-cost activities before and after school and during summer for K-12 students in Title I schools. The program is federally funded through 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) and administered on the state level by the Texas Education Agency.
As an extension of the ACE program, this poetry slam allows students to practice vital written and spoken communications skills, and performers also work to strengthen these skills through ACE-provided academic enrichment. The poetry slam also allows ACE to fulfill its purpose to engage families in their children's educational experience.
Admission to the event is free and open to all Texans Can - San Antonio students and guardians.
