The Diamonds are a "Step Team" of 21 students formed at Houston Can! Academy as an after-school program in January 2010. The team members have to meet specific criteria to join and maintain specific standards to remain, on the team. Each participant must have a 2.5 or higher GPA to be a Diamond. If a team member receives a "B" grade in any course, they must attend mandatory tutorials. Finally, team members must have zero (0) attendance and disciplinary issues.
The Diamonds'' goals are to promote togetherness and unity within their motto:
"A Diamond is something transparent that has been cut and polished and is valued as a precious gem. We are ladies of excellence; we are set aside and distinguished from the rest. We are above and not beneath, we are leaders, and not followers. Failure is not an option. We are winners because we never quit. We never quit because we always strive to win. You are... I am... A Diamond".
They were invited to participate in Houston''s St. Patrick''s Day Parade on March 13th. The Parade was kicked-off by Houston Mayor, Annise D. Parker. A performance by the group was featured on KIAH-TV, Channel 39. In addition, a representative from KHOU-TV, Channel 11''s "Great Day Houston" morning show team met the Diamonds and took their photograph.
