SPED Mentor Dallas and Austin/San Antonio Full Time Posted on 9/3/2010 | Primary Purpose: Responsible for providing support for Special Education teachers new to the Texans Can! system. Additionally, work proactively with leadership teams at all campuses as experienced Special Education teachers are identified who are identified who are having difficulty adapting to the environment.

Experience: At least 3 years experience teaching secondary students preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to assess the performance level of the Special Education teacher and establish a trust relationship quickly.
Demonstrate the ability to relate to the Special Education teacher as they work with students not only as they deliver instructional strategies but support in adjusting to the environment.
Be alert not only to the specific job assignment of the Special Education teacher but other outside factors that affect his/her ability to successfully perform the teaching duties.
The ability to maintain professional integrity and confidentiality throughout the total process working with the Special Education teacher(s), the principal and his/her leadership team.
Knowledge of and loyalty of the Texans Can!'s mission, vision and goals and model the professional ethics necessary to contribute to the institution's success.
Listening, advocating, protecting confidence, reaching out and celebrating successes are special skills necessary to work with the Special Education teacher through this mentoring process. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instructional and Program Management •Responsible for providing support for and guidance to new and experienced Special Education teachers. •Analyze the existing Special Education data relative to Special Education student performance. •Study and analyze the areas of growth for each Special Education teacher. •Responsible for planning, training, providing consultation and problem solving, demonstration teaching and collaborative instructional support for Special Education. •Providing non evaluative feedback and emotional support as the Special Education teacher is “learning while teaching”. •Working with other mentor staff members for growth and reflection to increase personal and professional skills to ensure the effectiveness as mentors. •Know and understand the organizational chart and demonstrate effective communication skills to be an effective team member to ensure continuous progress in the delivery of instruction. •Maintain an accurate and confidential activity log for responsible and professional accounting. •All other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress, be flexible and willing to accept multiple assignments. Repetitive hand motions, and prolong use of computers. Majority of work assignment will be in a school atmosphere. Out of town travel required.
